As Orange County Superintendent of Schools, it is an honor to represent you, and to promote our goal of a World Class Education – Where Every Student Succeeds. We can be proud that Orange County test scores continue to climb, schools remain safe, and more students are completing high school and going on to community colleges, colleges, or universities.
Orange County education is a community affair, which gives me the opportunity to participate in the activities of some exceptional groups, such as the MIND Research Institute, at the forefront of innovative and effective mathematics instruction, as well as the Ocean Institute and Discovery Science Center, both of which are invaluable partners in developing science education. Additionally, the Latino Education Attainment Initiative, a combined effort of the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE), the Orange County Business Council, United Way and other organizations, helps families navigate the educational system and facilitate success. Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Career Technical Education and other programs that give students the skills necessary to be successful in the future are a high priority.
Further, we must not overlook the arts. Our partnership with the Orange County Performing Arts Center and Arts Orange County allows enriching experiences for tens of thousands of students every year. The Alternative Education Program at the Orange County Department of Education and the Orange County Performing Arts Center, through an ongoing relationship, present "Summer at the Center." Alternative Education students gain an exposure and appreciation of the arts through the unique experience. The arts are essential for the creative nature of our students and will enhance their effectiveness in the 21st century workforce.
In tough economic times we work hard to see that our school districts remain fiscally responsible. With the assistance of the OCDE, each year our school districts make the necessary cuts to balance their budgets.
Promoting excellence, high standards with fiscal responsibility in our public schools is my highest priority. Your support is essential to accomplish this as I run for re-election as County Superintendent of Schools.
